Kylie’s Birth Story

Jesse and I were blesed with a very easy conception with Kylie. We talked of having a family and BAM! 5 weeks later, I had a positive pregnancy test.
The first and second trimester went smoothly (ignoring the all day sickness and food aversions) but the second and third would be more trying. I kept getting cramps in my lower back which would cause my legs to randomly go numb. At first it was scary, but our doctor assured us that it was just a pinched nerve and that when it happend, it basically just ment I was doing too much and needed to relax.
After a week of bedrest, all seemed to be fine.
The at about 37 weeks I started to get extreme hot flashes. My heart would race, especially when I was in the doctor’s office. They first thought it was “white coat syndrome” but them took my blood pressure and it was through the roof, I had pre-eclampsia. And was scheduled for an induction, the following Monday.
Sunday night Jesse and I packed our bags, grabbed some pillows and headed to the hospital at 6:00pm. I was led to a labor and delivery room, hooked up to the “nessicary” machines and the cervidil was put into place and the contractions started.
They went through the night in to Monday morning, when I was given pitocin. All went really well. I was progressing at a really good rate, not in too much pain and feeling great.
Monday morning went in to Monday evening and the labor just stopped. Ome minute I was having some pretty painful contractions and then nada. I was dialated to a 4 and it just stopped.
Our doctor gave us a choice, I could either get my pitocin up’d and have labor through out the night or we could attempt to get some rest and start again in the morning. We opted for the later.
Neither Jesse nor I slept from the antisipation and the contractions started up at about 4am again.
Tuesday morning came, I ate a light breakfast and started on the pitocin once again. This time my blood pressure was slightly elevated, but nothing to be alarmed about.
I went though out the day with no pain killers of any kind and was handling the labor beautifully, but not progressing. Frusterated, I started walking around the hospital for as long as the staff would allow me. I was checked by my doctor to see how far I was dialated again and I was to a 5!!! She promptly broke my water and the labor progressed. Or so I thought.
My doctor was delivering a baby in the next room (the woman had been in labor for all of about 5 minutes) so another doctor came to check me. She excitely told me that I was dialated to a 9 and that she would inform my doctor!!!!
My doctor finished up with what she was doing and came in to verify what the other doctor had told me. She didn’t say anything after she checked me, just asked the other doctor to meet her outside. There was some yelling and I didn’t see the other doctor for the rest of my stay there.
She came back in and said that I was still ”sitting pretty” at a 5 and that we would keep at it. The contractions started coming harder and I was having difficulty dealing with them and breathing Being so tired and exhausted, I just wanted to rest. A nurse came in and suggested some sort of pain relief to help me relax, in turn help me dialate.
Looking back at this, I really makes me mad that I was offerred this when I expressed deep concern for not wanting it. But being in the pain that I was in and being so exhausted I opted for the pain medicine. I didn’t care how they did it.
It didn’t last long, I ended up getting sick and it wore off in about 20 minutes.
The contractions were still coming strong until about 2am and I was still at a 5-6. Kylie’s heartbeat started to race. My doctor came in and with deepest sympathy told me that she thought it would be best if I have a c-section.
I was devastated. But in my heart, I knew that after nearly 3 days of intense labor and no sleep, I wouldn’t have the strength to push, as well as Kylie wasn’t dealing with the labor as well as we all would have liked.
They wheeled me in to the OR, gave me a spinal and I gave birth via cesaran section at 3:30 am on Wednesday May 17, 2006 to a healthy 8lb 6oz baby girl, Kylie Cassandra.
She will be soon celebrating her 2nd birthday!!!
